How to Design a Perfect DTF Gang Sheet: Layout, File Specs & Pro Tips
Last updated: 2026-05-23
Designing a DTF gang sheet properly saves you money, reduces waste, and produces sharper prints. This step-by-step guide covers the exact file specifications, layout rules, and pro tips European print shops use to design gang sheets that press cleanly every time.
Why gang sheet design matters
A poorly laid-out gang sheet wastes printable area, increases your per-shirt cost, and risks bleed between designs during cutting. A well-designed gang sheet packs every available square centimetre with usable artwork and ensures clean cuts.

File specifications for a DTF gang sheet
- Format: PNG (preferred) or PDF
- Resolution: 300 DPI (dots per inch)
- Color mode: RGB
- Background: transparent
- Maximum print width: 56 cm
- Length: any multiple of the metre length you've ordered
- Color profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1
Layout rules — gap, padding, edge bleed
Apply these rules to every gang sheet you submit:
- Minimum gap between designs: 5 mm horizontally and vertically — this gives the cutter room to separate transfers without nicking artwork
- Edge safe zone: keep all artwork at least 1 cm from the sheet edge
- No overlapping designs: overlapping causes peel and registration issues during heat pressing
- No bleed extension: unlike standard print, DTF artwork should be exactly the final printed size
How to pack designs efficiently
A common mistake is to leave large empty areas. Rotate smaller designs to fill gaps. Group designs by similar height into horizontal rows. Don't be afraid to mix small logos, slogans, and full-front designs on the same sheet — that's the whole point of a gang sheet.
Useful free tools to pre-arrange a gang sheet:
- Adobe Photoshop — manual layout with layers
- Adobe Illustrator — vector layout with snap-to-grid
- Canva Pro — drag-and-drop layout
- Krita or GIMP — free alternatives
Color and white underbase
DTF prints use CMYK plus white ink. The white layer (called the underbase) is automatically generated by the printer behind every colored pixel so the design pops on dark fabrics. You don't have to add white manually — just supply a clean RGB PNG with a transparent background.
Avoid pure black (#000000) for fine line details on dark fabrics. Use a slightly off-black (#0a0a0a) to give the underbase enough opacity to register.
Sizing each design correctly
Pre-size every design to the exact print dimensions before placing it on the gang sheet. Common chest-print sizes for adult T-shirts:
- Small chest logo — 8 × 8 cm
- Medium chest design — 25 × 25 cm
- Large front print — 30 × 35 cm
- Sleeve print — 5 × 10 cm

Cutting and pressing the gang sheet
Once your gang sheet arrives:
- Cut each design from the sheet with scissors or a craft knife, leaving 2–3 mm of clear film around each transfer
- Position the transfer on the fabric, film side up
- Press at 150°C (302°F) for 8 seconds with firm pressure
- Peel the film while still warm (RoyalDTF uses hot-peel film by default)
- Optional second press for 8 seconds with a Teflon sheet to set the print
Cost vs single transfers
If you're still ordering individual transfers, you're almost certainly overpaying. Compare exact numbers in DTF gang sheets vs single transfers cost calculator →.
FAQ
Can I mix DTF and UV DTF on the same gang sheet?
No. UV DTF stickers use a different ink system and adhesive. Order them separately — UV DTF stickers are at /products/uv-dtf-stickers.
What if my artwork is larger than 56 cm?
The 56 cm width is hard-capped by the printer. Designs wider than that need to be split or reduced. Length has no upper limit.
Do I need to add cut lines around each design?
No. RoyalDTF does not currently cut gang sheets — they are delivered as a continuous sheet and the customer cuts each transfer. Just keep 5 mm of empty space between designs so cutting is easy.
How long does production take?
24–48 hours after artwork approval, then 1–2 business days DHL Express delivery to most of Europe.
